Evolve-DB: Create graphical data models, conduct impact analyses and modify the database.

Keep your SQL database running smoothly and ready to adapt quickly to new business demands.

The Designer will manage the database from the graphical model, adding new tables, relationships, views, constraints, identity attributes, Temporal Tables, and more, and Xcase for i will automatically generate the necessary SQL code when synchronizing the database with the model.

The 4 main features of Evolve-DB are:

  • Documentation
  • Impact analysis
  • Change automation
  • Data security & control

Evolve-DB main benefits

Its powerful, state-of-the-art automation and graphic features quickly and accurately complete tasks encountered throughout the entire life cycle of your database.

High-quality diagrams (ERD) to document your model

  • Get a true modelling environment built around Entity Relationship Diagrams. Visualize, organize, and quickly navigate even the most complex databases using multiple and embedded diagrams
  • Get visual diagrams with full physical data relational navigation, using automatic parent/child browsers and lookups. Drill down to any level of detail, view and edit data; easily conduct proof of concept and demonstrations to end users
  • Also document DDS/SQL Hybrid Systems: reverse engineer existing DB2 for i, even if it contains both DDS-generated and SQL objects. Use of colour, fonts and detail within the diagrams quickly show the relationships between both types of components

Meticulous change-impact analysis

  • Thoroughly and reliably analyse “what if” scenarios for all changes. Get the scope – Indexes, Views, Triggers, Stored Procedures and Referential Integrity Constraints – of any change, with speed and accuracy
  • Before implementing a new Business Rule, check if your existing data complies with it. Generate reports on all data integrity errors found. You can then edit the physical data or generate SQL statements to identify all records with the same problem, to fix them programmatically.

Change automation, generation of SQL code

  • Modify your model either graphically or by setting properties, without coding
  • Generate with a mouse click the associated database objects – Constraints, Tables, Indexes, Views, Queries, Triggers and Stored Procedures. Change of field names, drop fields, modified keys will automatically be updated in all of the related SQL objects
  • View and modify attributes such as Record Format, compilation parameters, CCSID and many other attributes specific to the IBM i platform

Safety: Existing data preservation, built-in Version Control

  • Throughout the entire process, all previous versions of your database model are tracked
  • Compare a modified model to any previous version, generate a detailed report of all discrepancies found, and selectively choose the changes to apply, or decide to go back to a previous version
